Competition - the basic mechanism of market economy - forcing businesses to compete with each other and thus contributing to reduce the cost and improve product quality, meet customer needs, improves the economy. The need to ensure fair competition requires sound policies. Without exageerating we can say that the EU policy in the competition field performs a very important role in the social and economic level.
Because of it's mechanisms, first of all there is granted the acces to better goods and services for the consumers because of the EU laws.
Second of all it promotes the companies of the fellow states in the eu.
Competition is the best way to 'support' consumers. Of course, sometimes competition is not very good thing for firms, however, it help consumers to get goods and services in good quality and in law prices.
In a basic sense, the competition policy is designed to make the market more fair both for the consumers and for the economical actors.
The competition policy is also directed towards the restriction of the bigger enterprises in favour of the smaller ones. By limiting the expansion of huge companies, the competition policy stays healthy for the entire economy, because it does not allow the big companies to grow disruptively and to shut down the smaller ones. This way, the risk of having only big companies - or a hegemonic one, in worst case scenario - is gone.
So, the competition policy is healthy for the economic life of the business level, but it is also in favour of consumers, as I said in the beginning, as it allows the consumers to chose between similar products from different supplyers. The prices are more fair for the consumers and they are free to chose the quality-quantity as they seem more appropriate.
Competition is an important factor in politics; competition puts businesses in constant pressure to offer the best range of goods at the best possible prices, because if not, consumers have the opportunity to buy elsewhere. In a free market, the business should be a competitive game with consumers as beneficiaries.
Due to what Alec Burnside said in the interview, EU competition policy is for the consumers, so it is a good thing because it lowers the prices for them. Limiting the expansion of huge companies and minimizing the risk of shuting down the smaller ones, the competition policy keeps a healthy economic life. In this way, it also puts pressure between companies to supply offers, which comes again in the consumers` wellbeing. So the competition policy keeps better quality of the products and a varied and responsable offer.
In my opinion, competition puts businesses under constant pressure to offer the best possible range of goods at the best possible prices, because if they don't, consumers have the choice to buy elsewhere. In a free market, business should be a competitive game with consumers as the beneficiaries.
